A very interesting place in the center of Iran in Teheran is an ex US embassy. A bit of history: in the times when Iran was a monarchy ruled by shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi his relations with the West were very good. At that time USA treated even Iran as one of its closest allies on the Middle East. But growing Iranian problems caused by bribery, bloody repressing protests, bad management of capital gained from oil and much more caused Iranian Islam revolution. In 1979 shah’s regime collapsed. In one moment relations between Iran and USA changed totally and friendship converted into hatred. Shah left country and arrived to United States. As revenge a group of Iranian students occupied embassy and imprisoned 52 American diplomats for 4444 days. From that moment USA embassy in Teheran is called “spy’s nest”.
Today…. Walls around the embassy area are embellished by propaganda murals. I the garden there is an anti-American exhibition of posters and inside the building there is a museum. They say that in some rooms all the objects stayed as they were before the revolution. You can find here spying machines, old copiers and shredders and other equipment. Knowing a bit of Iranian-American relations history you can find this place very interesting. As least is was for us 🙂
